Title:

Detecting the Knowledge Structure of Bioinformatics with Text Mining and Citation Analysis

Abstract:

For the past couple of decades, Bioinformatics has grown into the cross-disciplinary field and proliferated into new areas of life sciences. The field has been characterized as an emerging discipline to utilize and help biomedical professionals interpret the vast amounts of data that are constantly being gathered in genomic, proteomics and functional genomics research. In this talk, we analyze the bioinformatics literature with the objective to identify the current knowledge structure of the field to diagnose the maturity of the field and the trends in the field. To this end, we apply several text mining techniques and link analysis including bibliometric analysis for full-text articles related to Bioinformatics harvested from PubMed Central. Unlike previous approaches to analyzing the bioinformatics literature, our approach utilizes the state-of-the-art text mining techniques to full-text articles and constructs a citation network for link analysis

Bio:

Min Song is an Associate Professor in the Department of Library and Information Science at Yonsei University starting from March, 2012. Prior to Yonsei, Min was an Associate Professor of the Department of Information Systems and Co-director of the Informatics Research Laboratory at New Jersey Institute of Technology, where the goal of his research is discovery of knowledge from large natural language data such as blogs, doctor’s notes, and scientific publications. His research interests are in text mining, bioinfomatics, information retrieval and digital libraries. He has published one book, five book chapters, 18 journals, and 50 conference papers. Min has received several grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) on developing advanced Digital Libraries systems. He received his PhD in Information Systems from Drexel University, an MS from Indiana University and a BA from Yonsei University in Korea.
