Title : Interaction between age at menarche and genetic polymorphisms on traits of metabolic syndrome

 

Abstract Early menarche has been associated with increased risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Although MetS has a significant genetic component, limited evidence, to date, supports a common genetic background underlying an association of age of menarche and MetS. Therefore, we evaluated previous GWAS-identified genetic variants for interactions between specific SNPs and age at menarche. At first, we identified the risk of MetS incidence was significantly increased only at 12 ≤ years of age at menarche. Women with early menarche (12 years) also had significantly higher levels of triglycerides and waist circumference. For gene-environment interaction, we identified 2 SNPs located on chromosome 2 (intergenic to the SCG2) were associated with triglycerides including the genetic interaction with age at menarche. These two SNPs were not associated with triglycerides in a main effect only model. These findings may help us understand the role of age at menarche on development of MetS, and gene-environment interactions that confer MetS susceptibility.
